Questions about Nova and FCR

[:1]I'll preface this by saying I've got a dual-dreaming orb using sorc, a fireball and frozen orb sorc using tals, and a lightning sorc (with infinity). While all of these builds bring something to the table, and at times they are what I'm looking for, I'm sort of dissatisfied with all of them for various reasons. I'm looking for something new, and I've got somethings in mind that I'd like feedback on before I commit.

The main new sorc I'm looking at is a 200FCR nova sorc using either frozen orb or fireball as a backup. Part of my dissatisfaction with the other three sorcs has to do with speed, and I'm eager to see if that extra breakpoint makes a meaningful difference in both teleport speed and killing speed. The goal here is threefold: killing speed, movement speed, and ease of play.

Projected gear is not firm, but would probably go something like

Griffs

Hoto

Spirit Shield

Vipermage

+2 Sorc, 20FCR ammy

Magefist gloves

1 FCR ring

1 Soj

Trek's or Waterwalks

Anni

Torch

7 lightning skillers with life

8 life/mana SCs

Since Griff's is all but required to hit 200FCR it seems like some form of lightning attack is a logical choice to pair with it (seems a shame to waste the lightning mods otherwise). I don't really want to build it as a full on lightning sorc though, because I dislike the variability of lightning's damage (1-36,000) and because lightning is sort of annoying to use when killing off scattered mobs (and mana intensive - I ran into issues in Chaos using my Light Sorc because she had to use a large number of lightning bolts just to hit entire mobs). Nova then seems like the logical choice. My concern here is with Nova's killing speed and the question of Infinity to aid with killing or Insight to aid with the mana intensive Nova.

Can anyone give me some info on how Nova tends to actually work as a killing spell in Hell, especially with more than 1-2 players? Does infinity make it more viable by increasing damage (and reducing the number of nova's needed to kill) or is Insight all but required? Tentatively looking at level 40 nova and lightning mastery.

The pairing with Nova would be either Orb (because it is so easy to clear rooms with it, especially on lower difficulties as a rushing tool), or fireball (since it also takes advantage of the FCR, and might do more damage). Can anyone offer some thoughts on which of the two looks like the better choice with Nova, given either Infinity or Insight?

Alternatively does anything have a better idea on a character build that works with 200 FCR? Because of my concerns about Nova's ability to kill effectively I'm not exactly sold on it and would be willing to entertain alternate ideas.

Thanks in advance.|||Quote:

Did you ever try CL for scattered mobs?

Nova isn't really any better than Lightning against those because the range is not that big and the damage is lower.|||None of the other builds really come close to pure lightning with Infi, which is pretty much the fastest build out there. I suggest you re-try it with some points in energy (and maybe Energy Shield) if mana was you main problem.

I made a Blizz/Nova sorc which was quite fun. With Infi you only need 1 pt in CM which leaves enough skill points for Blizz to be effecive with high-end equipment. Nova is a decent enough backup attack but still frustrating when you're facing monster that tend to scatter. It helps if you soften them up with static at higher player counts.|||Quote:

Right, hence why I was looking at frozen orb to go with it, as more of an area damaging tool. Hitting +14 all skills is viable with that build, with an additional 6-7 slots for charms. I was leaning towards all lightning, which would mean a level 34 orb, level 41 nova.

Alternatively, any thoughts about fireball with nova instead (nova as backup) or nova with hydra?|||Quote:

And what if it's CIs that scatter?

My intent would be to use the character to rush and maybe key run. Would also like to be able to run chaos.|||Quote:

Well for Chaos having Fire as main damage is a nono.

I think you should just give CL a go. You are trying to find something that works better than the best, but obviously there isn't.
