So I've made it through NM, at long last, with the help of a friend who is getting back into the game after a few years off. Currently lvl 75 Blizzard sorc, who has pitiful gear (was somehow using white regular gloves until the mid-60s) and a woefully under-level merc. So when I first forayed out into Hell it was, to say the least, a terrible slaughter-fest. Too many cold immunes and a merc unable to handle even a single zombie.
I could level the merc in NM, but I just want to move forward with the game, and grinding exp isn't necessarily the most fun I've had with my life. So the only other option (besides waiting for a public game) is to respec! I love my Blizzard with its ten tons of damage, but...oh well. Time for something different.
So after reading a ton of strategy guides and various builds I've decided that Enchant seems like a fun skill. But...gear intensive. At least for the good builds. So I'm thinking of making an Enchant sorc with Orb backup (good for freezing and fire immunes, and because casting spells is fun). Once I get the runes I might switch to a dual-Dream melee sorc, but this is something fun in the interim.
I THINK I have 82 or 83 skill points so far (75 levels + 8 quests), so what do you think of this allocation?
Fire:
20 Warmth
20 Enchant
X Fire Mastery
Cold:
20 Frozen Orb
5 pre-reqs
X Cold Mastery
Lightning
1 TK
1 Teleport
Skills - Enough for gear, no Energy, max Life
My current gear is Lore (helm) and Spirit (sword), with some unique items filling in the other gaps until I can upgrade. As soon as I can I want to get a Passion phase blade, but I'm a terrible/reluctant haggler and would rather just do Countess runs/Cube than trade.
What do you think of this as an interim build, and as there anything obvious that's missing or I should think about??|||Firstly welcome to the forum.
And before you respec try getting a new merc with a higher lvl, an act 2 night merc would with a decent weapon is very handy for immunes.
also pure blizz is very good for mfing meph which can be rewarding|||Thanks for your reply! I can definitely see your point, and agree that there are benefits to Blizzard (and that I can mitigate most downsides with a merc of appropriate level). But IF I decide that spamming the same spell (or two) over and over again is not exactly fun, does this look ok?
Also, I currently have Act 2 NM merc with Holy Freeze (level 60). If I go back to hire a new merc, will his level be closer to mine? I'm not entirely sure how that works.|||with the merc yes he will be closer to your levl if you get a new one, just make sure to remove his kit before you do.
orb is a very good skill that doesnt need many points, but trying to be a caster and mele as well is going to cause problems. i would recomend either going mele or caster. there are seceral dual element builds out there orb can work with fireball or lightning being the most popular.|||I'd suggest using a Demon Machine / Razortail with that build (so much fun!), or trying Blizzard/Fireball (my favorite sorc so far). DM/Razortail isn't as powerful as Blizzball, but has much more style points.|||I think you'll find Enchant equally frustrating in its own way, mostly because Sorcs don't hold up well defensively in melee combat - especially with less-than-ideal gear.
Trading isnt nearly the headache you seem to think it is, there's usually very little haggling involved as most items, runes especially, have accepted prices/values. Passion is a very affordable and powerful runeword and is a must if you want to go the Enchant route. Countess runs in Hell will get you there, but trading is much faster and easier - and you're only in NM now, anyway

Also, you forgot 1 pt in Static Field, another must for any sorc.|||if youre like most people and find the most effective chars to be the most fun, then it wont get any better than blizz lol
