Its a very nice guide, however I still have some questions.
1. Why put 20 into Telekinesis? I know it helps ES....so Socialism is encouraging us to use ES? I thought ES is only good if we have gg stuff? I thought without gg stuff ES would be a waste? and do I really have to put points into ES?
2. So the idea is to just blindly tele....which is holding down tele,to reach Meph right?
3. WHere else can i run other than Meph?
4. You mentioned this is the best pure meph runner, what about blizz sorcs? Arent they also great vs meph runs?
5. This is (I think going to be my skill layout)
- 20 FO
- 20 CM
- Enough in tele for low mana cost (4-6 mana is fine right)
What else?|||1. TK greatly reduces the damage you take when ES is active, using ES without TK is fairly pointless because you aren't maximizing it's effectiveness. ES is still helpful even with average gear, although without adding hard points you may only end up with 50-75% ES.
2. Yes, hold down right click and giv'r.
3. Andariel would be another one you could run, there are no cold immunes in Catabombs lvl 4 IIRC, and if there are they can be pretty easily avoided. Ancient tunnels is also another area with no cold immunes. You could even do travincal as I believe Toorc Icefist is the only member who spawns as a cold immune (unless one of the other superunique council members spawns with cold immunity).
4. Blizz sorcs are great vs meph but take much more +skills in your cold tree to be effective. You could make a blizz/es but your damage wouldn't be overly great because you'd be sacrificing damage for survivability (which is somewhat common in HC). Orb only needs skills put into orb and mastery, so I'd say it's a better choice for HC. Plus a well placed orb will take chunks off meph's HP pretty quick.
5. Max TK and put a few into warmth IMO. His guide says to add some to static but I would dump whatever points you have left into ES.
So:
20 FO
20 CM
20 TK
Enough in tele for low mana
1-5 warmth
Rest in ES
That's what I would do, but feel free to comment if it seems flawed, folks.|||Ok...so you are saying ES is great even with low-end gear? My gear is really bad lol - this is start of ladder!|||Using ES will give you more "life" than a sorc without ES. The damage absorbed by your mana is essentially additional life.|||Essentially, with the highest lvls of Energy Shield and maxed TK, along with max block (really easy to accomplish with a high number of different easy to find shields) and maxed Poison Resists... you are gonna have 75% chance to block each and every physical attack along with ranged and even some magic attacks as well. You are gonna have 95% physical damage reduction, and you are gonna have zero worries about resistances other than keep the aforementioned Poison resists high (poison bypasses ES).
I would say that is an incredible amount of toughness, and it's all achieved from finding an appropriate shield and allocating your stats/skills correctly. So yes, the answer to your question is this is perfect for those with starting gear, and it can only get better as your gear improves.
This is not to say it doesn't have any weaknesses. Keep your Faster Blocking and Faster Hit Recovery as high as possible, look up your breakpoints. Back off defensively, any packs you come across that are mana burn. And the number one issue from my experience: I like to play a variation of this, that keeps Life and Mana at equal amounts as I level (Life 1 more point than Mana). Blood Curse is a killer to this build if you have full Energy and no Life, and even Mana Burners can take your whole Mana bulb and leave you relying on Max Block to survive. I like Avoiding Blood Curse altogether with my method, and using Insight on merc, plus higher Warmth than some other builds might use. I put any spare points of my build into Warmth.
Your results may vary.|||I remember a statement from Socialism (was it in the orb-it-aller thread?) saying that except for this very specific build he strongly frown upon Energy Shield (which I agree). This build was specifically tailored for use of ES, first, because it has a main attack that can work with just 40 points, leaving a lot of room for maxing you ES the way it should. yes, it's specifically made for starting from scratch, with crappy gear and destroying Mephisto specifically (although I don't see why it wouldn't work work with Andariel). Although it CAN kill the whole Ancient Tunnels, you may find its killing speed a tad slow with IMO kills the purpose of MF.|||Quote:

So you are saying I should use ES for this particaulr build even though I have low-end gear?|||This has got to be one of those classic "give a man a fish, teach a man to fish" things....
Like 2-3 people have answered you here in this post, and Socialism's guide is very clear about your question.
What exactly aren't you understanding? I made a build very similar to Socialism's guide, and I used it as my first character on this new ladder. WITH NO GEAR.|||I guess its about ES. shoudl i use ES even with mediocre gear?|||Yes, just follow the guide.
Like I said the damage ES absorbs is basically additional life, so you will always survive longer than a plain vita sorc. Also keep in mind that with ES you don't need good resists aside from poison, so you don't need to sacrifice for + resist gear.
