Staff Themed Sorceress

I've been contemplating a staff-themed sorceress (i.e., one that only uses unique staves), because... well.. pretty much for the hell of it.

I'm thinking of just progressing through most of the unique staves in the game as I level up. Salamander to Iron Jang Bong, to Chromatic Ire, etc. until finally finishing up with Mang Song's Lesson.

I'm also trying to pack on as many +skills in my equipment as I can. So I'll definitely thow on a Shako, Arach, and 2 SoJs. For armor, I don't have the runes for Enigma, but I can afford Enlightenment in an Archon Plate.

Before I went any further, a thought occured to me that may make this build completely unviable - no shield, and crap resistances (ignore for the moment that I can get the same +5 skills out of my weapon/shield slot by going for Occy + Spirit over Mang Song, and solve a good chunk of the resistance problem in one go - remember I'm going for a theme here).

The question is simple - is there a way to make this work without stuffing my inventory full of resistance charms?|||sure, use resist gear instead of +skills gear... but seriously, why not use vipermagi? you could pick one piece of equipment to handle most of your res needs like kira's guardian or smoke armor. rockstopper is an excellent source of res as well, and it also has 10% dr which is nice. a belt would be a good place for some res since it only offers 1 skill. there are some good single and double res unique and set belts. my HC meph/LK sorc uses lionheart (it's good for casters too!) and wizzy for most of her res, then puts mf everywhere else. i know you cant go with wizzy, but you could put a res jewel in your staff, an um in your viper and use a rare sorc circlet with res. you just need to squeeze it in wherever you can get it.

in reality unless you have tons of skillers laying around, you're probably better off getting res from your inventory and getting all your +skills from gear. if you do have skillers laying around, then maybe you can sacrifice gear +skills for res as i mentioned above.

also be sure to use leaf at least once when you're leveling, it's great and available really early!|||if u are looking for a way around resistances, u might want to consider using energy shield. u can get 95% of the dmg to ur manal, so not much use for high res on that last 5%. if ur using 2 sojs anyway, u will have a huge mana pool. get frosts and some crafted mana boots and...some integer dmg and mdmg reduction would be good, like a gladiators bane or something in that direction (ive seen some infinity wielding es sorcs, so it seems viable)

insight on a prayer merc would be the best addition to this...

however ES limits ur skills...an orb/firewall or orb/nova would come to mind|||Hmmm... Vampermagi would give +1 and could get good resists. I probably have some res all jewels lying around so that I wouldn't even have to blow an Um on it. That might be a decent compromise. Smoke is obviously even better, but then I'm giving up all +skills on it. Rockstopper is an excellent suggestion. And belts isn't a bad idea either. I think my best bet there may be Credendum, and again, I'm only losing one +skill. Actually, now that I think about it, if I'm getting +5 just from the staff, maybe I don't need THAT many other skillers. I suppose I can make some other compromises. I'm pretty sure I don't have a +2 sorceress skill circlet that also has good resistances, but I'm almost certain I have a +1 sorceress skill circlet that does.

I've never been big into ES. I haven't played one in a while, but my past attempts have been less that successful, for the exact reason you mention - it costs a lot of skill points, and leaves me underpowered.|||ES would be better imo... frostburns+2 sojs make ur mana pool huge.

You can use kiras and viper for resists.|||Ok, I know you don't have the wealth for enigma (why would you even consider using that in a sorceress is beyond me, but that's besides the point), but your armor would probably need to be chains of honor and you should just use a vmagi while you don't have it.

If you're going with the Energy shield route (which you might want to if you're not particularly wealthy and/or want to absolutely have as many +skills as you want), then I would use Ondal's Wisdom as your staff.

Consider Ondal's gives you bonuses to energy (good for ES), bonuses to defense (which will probably be boosted by chilling armor if you use it, making you less of a sitting duck) and magic damage reduced by 5-8, which stacks nicely with the 9-13 provided by a vipermagi making your ES even better. It has more FCR too (Vmagi + ondals + arach = 95% Fcr, add a +2sorc/10fcr ring and you're set) and all it takes away is +1 to your skills assuming you find a +4 skills one, ofc. All in all, it looks like a much better option than Mang Song's Lesson when going ES.

If you decide to go maxed resists, you would then need to focus your gear towards that a bit more. I would probably go with kiras for helm, and vmagi is so cheap anyways that you should get one for that (socket both with Um or all resist jewel). If you play online, there is always anni and torch, people usually don't care for good resists on those, so try and shoot for a 10-20-5 anni and a 10-20 torch if you can.

gl with your project

P.S.: what build are you planning on using?|||ondal's is a fine suggestion. i had a friend use it as end-game material on a wind druid.

if you're going to go es and have a staff, i dont see why you wouldnt use insight staff on main. it has fcr, whatever skills you can get from the base, stats, mana per kill, and makes you merc independent for mana recover letting you do more with him like use reaper's or infinity.

one staff i've wanted to use was naj's. it's pretty terrible in itself and the complete set doesnt do much +skill wise, but it has such fine mods otherwise including big res, mana and life. it's really a shame that it only amounts to +1 skill for each item. i just looked at it again and notice the giant amounts of defense the armor and the set bonuses adds, so maybe you could go with a big defense build where in you max out a cold armor. i can imagine it being a pretty safe set to use... maybe i'll screw around with it on HC... think i have it all.
