Merc Troubles vs Mephy/Light Sorc Questions

[:1]Hey Guys, so I've been having trouble with my merc tanking Hell Meph. I mean sure, I can kill him fine and have my merc live by just teleporting a bit more and letting my merc heal up. But, what I want to do is see if I can make my merc just sit there and take all that meph can dish out while I blast him with lightning.

Currently, my set up is this:

My sorc(level 92) is Lightning/FO (20L, 20CL, 20LM, ~15ish in Chargedbolt, 20 FO, ~10-15ish in CM)

Gear is currently: Shako, Chance guards, Occy, 34fcr Spirit Monarch, SoJ, Nature's Peace (to attempt to stifle that darn Nihl's CE), Tal's Ammy (I have a 21 Mara's so I could use that instead), Vipermagi, Arachnid, Anni, Sorc torch, 2 Light GC's, and some 7mf SC's.

With all that, I have 15-16k lightning, and ~220MF.

As for my merc:

Holy Freeze Act 2 merc (level 92)

Ral'd Andy's, 3,300 defense eth Fortitude, and an eth CV Insight.

With all that, he does around 6.2k damage and has 2.1k health.

Is the lack of crushing blow, attack speed, and hit recovery what's holding him back? I love his fort, but it doesn't have an IAS or FHR. I also don't have a CTA at the moment, and I'm sure that having one would help immensely- but enough to accomplish what I want? I'm not sure.

On a side note, I'm considering switching to a pure light build because I currently have the option to make an eth CV Infinity, and I have a unid Griffon's. I'm wondering how much more effective it would be if I were to switch to that build.|||honestly i think you need to get a infinity... that's what helps my merc tank long enough for me to zap meph..

as for switching to a pure light. i kill meph in about 2 hits with no griffons. i do 32k light damage with my mf gear on. i think this would be the best option

oh and if you make infinity DONT put it in a cv. go for a giant thresher or a thresher. you lose some damage but you get a higher attack speed which means crushing blow will trigger more often.|||I would actually suggest, if you ever want to kill anything other than Meph as well, making the Infinity in a scythe or voulge, and hold it yourself. Remember, you don't get the awesome 45-55% lower enemy light res if your merc holds it. It won't make an enormous difference against Meph (still helps tho), since the aura will already get his resists low, but it will allow you to shred any (formerly) immune monster, especially with Griffons as well. Plus, you can let your merc keep the Insight and the wonderful meditation aura too!

Just to note, Meph's res in Hell is 75. The lvl 12 conviction aura reduces that to -10. If you hold Infinity and Griffons with a light facet, that is an additional -65 to -80, so you could potentially get Meph to -90% lightning res with that setup! He will die fast! In addition, the conviction aura reduces the enemy defense as well, so that will make it easier for your merc to hit consistently and leech (if he even gets a hit in before Meph dies, lol).

A few more things, if you switch to a Might merc, he will do more damage and leech better. More damage = more life. And yes, CTA makes a huge difference. Go full light!|||Ah darn Shauku, I wonder how long it'll take me to get an eth giant thresher. I was so ready for that eth CV infinity. Now not so sure, ha. And also, I'm aiming for somewhere between 200-300 mf, but would having lower (say 150-200) really be any less effective? I remember in the old days it was something like 149 or 159 was optimal, but since then Blizzard has smoothed out the distribution.

And when we say "pure light" are we saying, 20charged bolt, 20L, 20CL, 20LM, 1 into each of tele, static, ES(maybe not with the lack of an Insight?), frozen armor, and the rest into warmth? And I'm thinking about adding 2 more Light GC's for a total of 4 light gc's (enough? too much?)|||ethereal giant thresher (or plain thresher) infinity + vampire gaze + ebug Treachery

My merc rarely dies, if ever, and he hits the 44% breakpoint.|||Quote:

i did no es, 1pt into frozen armor, 1 warmth, and the rest into nova cause to boost other skills damage output|||Quote:

Ah okay, what do you do to cope with mana consumption? Lots o' pots?|||honestly i take a pot here and there, and that's about it. then again i'm lvl 97, with no points in energy. some builds suggest that you make your total energy at 100 or so, but i don't like that because pots are cheap. plus with +skills you'll get your warmth up to around 10 or so, which i think is good enough.

that's just how i do it though, if you'd feel better with max warmth then go for it. i'm a damage junky though so that's how i decided to do it|||Alright, thanks Shauku. Yeah, it seems like mana really shouldn't be that much of an issue. Seems that step 1 is making a CTA, and step 2 is finding an Eth giant thresher or eth thresher for that infinity.|||if you don't have the stuff to make a cta, a 1 or 2 bo cta isn't all that expensive.
