Dear Sorcforumites
I'm at lvl88 with a blizz sorc... the usual unsurprising skills setup, 20 in bliz/cm/gs/ib, 1 in static/tele/warmth... gear is standard stuff: shako, tal amu, viper, 2xspirit, snowclash, frosties [chance guards & goldwrap for MF], one cold skiller and a small collection of assorted crappy 3% resist small charms. I guess I do a tickle over 4k damage with blizz so I'm ok for now.
I'm pretty effective in most of the normal MF runs, which is great and all that, but my merc gets toasted by almost any scary situation involving a CI.
Kasim the Not So Useful, is an act2 frosty freezey merc, with an insight CV (not eth - shame, but, you know, it's what I found), shaftstop, and andys face (with a ral).
Most of all I have is self found or traded for beans, so buying uber gear isn't really an option.
So... What can I do to stop Kasim getting creamed by the first batch of CIs I run into?
Is it worth upping the shaftstop for more def, and maybe socketing it with something? If so, what? IAS jewel or rune for resists?
I don't have CTA. Would I get more benefit holding out for a CTA?
My problem here with CTA is that Ohm runes aren't exactly the commonest item in game but the rest could be found given enough time. I guess I could trade for one, but it's way out of my budget and my "wealth" = precisely one ist, at this moment in time.
Any suggestions?|||If you are not overly wealthy I'd say he's about as good as he's going to get at the moment.
Upgrading to an eth insight CV/CA/thresher would boost his damage, thus making him leech more, thus keeping him alive longer. Same goes for upgrading his shaft to a fortitude, which is not overly expensive to make.
Other than that all you can really do is wait until you've got enough wealth to make a CTA, so he (and you) can benefit from the nice life boost.|||Ok, fortitude looks cool - I guess the tricky bit is finding a Lo rune + a decent base armour (probably easier) - the optimal thing here is something ethereal + the cube socket recipe?|||scrap the forty, get him a treachery. way cheaper and pair it with eth insight
and ebugging armors works like this, yes. eth armor without sockets + cube recipe|||Holy freeze is not the best aura for blizz sors' merc.
Defiance, prayer or even might for more ll would be better imo.|||Why do people not like holy freeze for cold sorcs? The slow stacks.|||Quote:

Yes treachery and duress work well on merc.|||Quote:

A sorceress with +80 points into cold skills needs something to kill the cold immune monsters. Holy Freeze is great against packs where it can slow things down while you mow then down, but I've never found it to be anywhere near the tankiness of a Defiance aura.
You could argue that with amazing items the Holy Freezer will be great, but with amazing items so will any mercenary.|||Armor: Treachery, Duress, Duriel's Shell.
Weapon: Obedience or Reaper's Toll are also nice.
Basically the merc needs leech and resists for survive. Might+Obedience will kill anything.|||thanks for the suggestions, all
MYK has it in a nutshell, anything that isn't CI is toast within seconds anyway, and I need the merc to take any CI down.
So I think first stop is to say goodbye to Kasim and get a defiance merc... Then upgrade armour to whatever I can get out of fortitude, duress, or treachery - whilst keeping an eye out for a decent eth CV/CA to make another insight or obedience.
