FrozenStorm MF Build

[:1]I'm sure this has been discussed or tried in the past...

but I'm starting a new thread for it anyways.

Just started back up recently so I made this mf sorc

to start it off. I'm currently level 85 blizzard specced and

want to be able to mf everywhere with out a problem. My friend

a lvl 87 hammerdin and I have been tag teamin mf runs.

It goes like this:

I kill andariel, meph, pindle while he does countess. we usually finish around the same time and then we both do trav high council, then chaos, then Baal.

I have been considering a hybrid spec for a while now and meteorb doesn't seem like it will suffice. I want to be able to kill countess when I'm

mfing alone and my merc isnt good enough for that.

We have also both noticed that there seems to be more cold/fire immunes than there are cold/light immunes throughout our 2 man mf runs. Therefore I have nearly come to the conclusion of buildin a cold/light sorc.

Skills:

ice bolt-20

frozen orb (one synergy-ice bolt)-20

cold mastery-15

thunder (zero synergies)-20

lightning mastery-15

teleport-1

energy shield-1

To complete this build I must be level 90 and finished all extra skill quests so I will have 102 skills.

My gear:

shako w/topaz

tal armor w/topaz

tal amulet

tal belt

occy w/ ist

cta on swap weapon for warcry buffs

spirit monarch

chance guards-40%

war travs-49%

2x 26% nagel rings (option to switch one with soj)

sorc torch 12/16

anni 18/20/10

gheeds 24% and 4x 7%mfsc

Any thoughts, constructive criticisms, suggestions?|||Forgot to mention my merc...

Act 2 Hell defensive merc. he uses insight CV, ethereal stone and veil of steel. I'm thinking about putting guardian angel on him though to give him 90 all resistances.|||thunderstorm fires too slow and does not deal sufficient damage over time. rather use nova|||I have never even considered nova, good suggeation|||A couple of thoughts. I think you may have some problems with your resists with your equipment list. You might want to consider going with the full Tal Rash set. Excellent extra bonus for completing set on top of the partial set bonus you already have...

+3 To Sorceress Skill Levels

+150 To Life

All Resistances +50

+50 Defense vs. Missile

+150 Defense

Here's another option and the one I'd suggest. It isn't quite as high for MF but still should put you above 340mf and you'll probably kill faster and have maxed all resists.

Replace Tals armor with Chains of Honor (huge resists), replace Tals ammy with Mara (more resists), and replace Tal belt with Arachnids. If you can add maybe 2-3 cold skillers and 2-3 lite skillers that would be very helpful as well. And if so you should have some extra spots below them for a few more small charms, maybe some 20 lifers would be nice.

MF will come from
  • 74 Shako (ptopaz)

  • 80 Occy (ist)

  • 25 from COH

  • 26 from nagel (see if you can get a 30 they're pretty cheap)

  • 40 from chancies

  • 49 from travs

  • 24 from gheeds

  • 28 from 7mf scs

The items you already mentioned that fill in the rest quite nicely are Spirit Monarch, CTA (and another Spirit hopefully, Lidless if not) on switch, 1 SOJ, Anni, and Torch.

As for skills I've been using a lite/cold sorc for quite some time and find lightning/chain lightning/frozen orb to be the best set of skills to use.

  • 1 warmth

  • 1 charged bolt

  • 1 static field

  • 1 telekinesis (prereq for teleport)

  • 1 teleport

  • 20 lightning (mostly used on cold immune bosses)

  • 20 chain lightning (mostly used on cold immune packs, or any packs without lightning immunes for that matter)

  • 20 lightning masteries

  • 3+ nova (synergy for lightning and chain lightning, add this last and use extra points here )

  • 1 thunder storm (nice 1 point wonder especially if you have skillers)

  • 1 ice bolt (prereq for orb)

  • 1 ice blast (prereq for orb)

  • 1 glacial spike (prereq for orb)

  • 1 blizzard (prereq for orb)

  • 20 frozen orb (your primary attack for anything that isn't cold immune)

  • 1 cold masteries (or whatever you need to hit 17 with + skills)

  • 1 frozen armor (prereq for shiver)

  • 1 shiver armor (my preferred of the 3 armors)

Total of 96

You can hit these with lvl 85 assuming you have all 12 skills from quests. Anything beyond lvl 85 I'd add to Nova as it will boost your lightning and chain lightning damage by a good bit.

Don't forget the other important quests, normal, nightmare and hell (30 resists Anya, 60 life from Alcor, and 15 stats from Alcor)

With this setup you'll do enough damage with your 3 main skills to solo hell without any area being much of a problem, especially if you can modify your merc a bit. This part might be a bit expensive, but it will make a huge difference in kill speed and staying alive.

Merc (I'd consider switching to Act 2 Nightmare, Might for the extra damage)
  • Ethereal Andy (socket with either a Ral to fix the -30 fire resist, or a 15ias jewel preferably with either fire resist mod or enhanced damage mod)

  • Ethereal Fortitude

  • Ethereal Infinity

Your merc will be tough as nails. Be sure he keeps up with you as you level above 85 (trade him in if he doesn't, but don't forget to take that gg gear off first).

Using this setup you should easily be able to MF all of these areas in hell...

  • Mausoleum

  • Countess

  • The Pit

  • Andy

  • Ancient Tunnels

  • Summoner (if you're also key running)

  • Travincal

  • Meph

  • Chaos Sanctuary/Diablo

  • Pindle

  • Nithalak (yes you can run for D keys)

  • Worldstone Keep

  • Baal

I'm currently lvl 96 with this setup and have around +18 skills from gear/anni/torch/skillers and she does very severe damage. And my merc? Nothing kills him.|||Wow. Thank you for the very detailed response! I have a couple questions for you though haha. Surprisingly enough, my resists are all 75 maxed in he'll difficulty. I dont like the idea of switching to full tal at all for that matter haha but option behind door #2 sounds promising... but what about my mf percentage? the three tal set pieces give me 192% alone. I have a Mara in my stash but I never considered using it for mf runs. if I did change from these three tal pieces, I would use the three that you recommended in their place. But is it worth it to cut down that much mf? I forgot to mention above that I also have a 100% mf monarch that I use about half the time but I was planning on trading it and sticking with spirit. Would it really be worth it to cut down on that much magic find? Really?

I haven't gotten my hands on a second spirit shield yet for my cta switch hand but I definitely plan on it. As far as the merc goes, I really like the insight meditation aura... I never have to buy mana potions anymore! He does great damage with it too. I will probably switch to nm holy freeze and get fortitude and andy face too. Thanks for the tips!|||Next question:

Is the synergy damage to orb from ice bolt not significant enough? I feel like orb would just be weak if it were my primary attack.

I really like the idea of this build, my only concern is killing meph really slow lol. I guess I would blizzard and orb him down?|||I've used orb/light with a heavy orb. It works pretty well, particularly with the set bonuses from full tal's. With a spirit shield, 2x soj, a torch, anni, and CTA, you could almost hit 600 damage/shard. Cold facets would help even more.|||of the sorcs i've made for general mf, i prefer chain light/orb myself

another common set up (in addition to the ones mentioned above):

shako (topaz)

tal ammy

hoto (wizzy or occy work too)

tal armor

spirit monarch

trangs (or mages)

tal belt

soj (or whatever, one ring slot is free)

fcr ring (good place to get res)

war travs (or whatever to fill out res)

cta/phoenix on switch for BO and redemption (spirit/lidless is fine).

merc is andy/fort/infinity though insight is fine too. he's holy freeze just to cover the cannot be frozen monsters though i'm sure any will do.

with 3 pieces of tal, you get the good bonuses without having to deal with all the pieces. mixing partial tals with rares/uniques allows you more flexibility imo. it's been a long time since i first started using this set up and i'm not sure on raw numbers if it's better or worse than full tals (+skill and mf wise), but i prefer it as i said b/c of the flexibility in gear.

looking at my sorc now i have +15 cold skills and +16 light skills (1 light skiller). only fire point used was 1 for warmth. i maxed lightning, chain lightning and lightning mastery (working on charged bolt). cold side i maxed frozen orb and 2 into cold mastery to get to slvl 17. i picked charged bolt to max last instead of nova b/c if you work it right it's a great boss killer. she's listed at 491-514 orb (-100 mastery), 6414 chain light, and 14533 lightning. she hits the 117 fcr break for lightning and is fun to play (i never really liked met/orb personally). infinity is not needed at all really since this is a dual tree build, but i had one so i use it. i dont need to pot often so dont miss insight much at all. phoenix switch is great for recovering life/mana after a battle.

she's missing a bit in the fire res, but i dont really see it as being a problem. for the other res, she's got enough and stacked a bit on light/cold. this is a SC bnet sorc so i didnt worry about block and res/life/damage were helped out immensely with torch/anni.|||All great builds for sure, especially great for versatility reasons. Do you guys still find a decent amount of uniques with less than 400mf? Im around 645% if I throw on the 4ist monarch... I find a rare or unique from almost every boss I kill...

I like the orb/light idea. I respecced to orb/nova like suggested above. Nova casts really fast and does about 2k but it burns the mana like crazy and that 2k still seems pretty weak. I will try the orb/light build now though. thanks for everyone's input.
